Mark Zuckerberg’s Shiny New Distraction: Meta and the Metaverse
Facebook has been facing a crisis over the past few months after a whistleblower revealed that the company has been using an extremely toxic business model, targeting young adults and children with their insecurities to make more money. It has created a mental health crisis among younger generations.
Mark Zuckerberg revealed that Facebook will now be known as Meta. The app will remain known as Facebook, and the other apps the company owns will also stay the same. Meta is just the new name for the company to hide behind to try to avoid further backlash. He will only continue his harmful business practices in the Metaverse, what he hopes to be a virtual reality platform for users to hang out, work, exercise, and more.
This is just going to make things worse because people will be able to alter their appearance further. Eventually, they’ll become so immersed in it that they’ll practically live in the metaverse to hide from their reality. This is everything “Black Mirror” warned us about. While technology has improved our lives in many ways, we are reaching a point where it is becoming dangerous on certain levels.
